The boundary stone shown here near Pillmersreuth marks the boundary between the Principality of Bamberg and the Margraviate of Brandenburg-Bayreuth. Since the borders often led to border disputes up to the beginning of the 19th century, conspicuous border stones decorated with coats of arms were set over time. Only a few badly weathered coat of arms stones are left, which show the Bamberg lion on one side and a Hohenzollern coat of arms or the Prussian eagle on the other.

Vaellus

Our path "Zum alten Grenzstein" takes us back to the year 1686: in the Thronbach valley you can see the coat of arms of the Bamberg bishopric and the Margraviate of Bayreuth on the aged stone. What sounds like a simple territorial boundary for us was much more: The stone separated Catholic from Protestant land! And even today, the old course of the border can be seen in the predominant denomination of the villagers.

The boundary stone standing here is made of sandstone and dates from 1686. On one side you can see the coat of arms of the bishopric of Bamberg, on the other that of the Margraviate of Bayreuth. Thus, the stone also separated Catholic and Protestant areas.

In 1982 the stone was brought for restoration and did not reappear until 1986 - in the local museum of the town of Naila. After some back and forth between the towns of Naila and Schwarzenbach am Wald, the stone was put back in its old place
