Here begins the dyke that separates the IJsselmeer (formerly Zuiderzee) from the North Sea (in Dutch, the meanings of 'See/Zee' and 'Meer' are reversed compared to German). The dyke with the motorway towards Friesland is quite an impressive structure.

Pyöräily

The place name "den Oever" means "the shore" and is an old name for the area in which the village is located. When the Dutch Wadden Sea was created, the area was open water only to the east. When the Wadden Sea and Zuiderzee had spread out, there was half mud flats, half open water. The shore was further west at about Oosterland. But in the 14th and 15th centuries the shore of the island of Wieringen advanced again and several small settlements were established, one of which was Den Oever.
