Several weeks after the end of French rule, on April 1 and 2, 1814, some Mecklenburg soldiers, together with citizens of Aachen, destroyed the base of the Tranchot Obelisk in an attempt to gain access to the coins and medals hidden within. The obelisk shattered and tumbled down the hill. During the reconstruction, the Prussians replaced the French inscription with a German one and placed the Prussian eagle on the top.

Located directly north of the city center, the wooded ridge with its forest-park landscape and its viewpoints is a beautiful local recreation area.

The park-like design dates back to 1807, when the city council decided to plant the Lousberg at the suggestion of the French prefect Alexandre de Lameth. This makes it one of the oldest public parks in Germany.
