The biodiversity is impressive in this area:
* Birds: four species of woodpeckers including a pair of black woodpeckers. Also sparrowhawk, buzzard, kestrel, little owl, tawny owl, little reed warbler, wild duck, gadwall, shelduck, water rail and little grebe
* Butterflies: . the brown blue and the orange sand eye
* Mammals: foxes and dwarf mice
All these animals were spotted by Lieven Caekebeke who ensures grazing in the area with his sheep. He feasts his eyes while his sheep graze the area (begrazing.be).

Images say more than words. Of course there were no sheep or goats present during these winter days.

The Heistergem retention basin (nature reserve near the Eeksken on the border between Lebbeke, Buggenhout and Opwijk) along the Vondelbeek was redesigned by the Flemish Environmental Agency (VMM) in the course of 2013 and 2014.
In the course of 2010, a cooperation agreement was concluded with the neighboring municipalities of Lebbeke, Opwijk and Buggenhout, whereby VMM committed to making the retention basin more ecological and to release the necessary investments for this, and the municipalities each committed to managing the management of the reservoir for their own territory. to take on the holding basin.
