An interesting anecdote concerns the battles around the pond during the war. Soldiers used the pond as a natural barrier and shelter. There are stories of soldiers wading through the water at night to reach enemy lines, which gave the pond strategic significance.

In the 14th century, the city of Ypres constructed the Zillebekevijver for its water supply, and this pond still supplies drinking water via a purification plant on the western bank. The 28-hectare pond, surrounded by a double row of trees, is a valuable nature reserve with water lilies and various bird species such as grebes, herons and ducks. Recreation such as walking, cycling and fishing (with a permit) is possible there.
