The Countess Mechthild von Sayn had this church built from 1245 as a cloister church. The church is even 2 years older than Cologne Cathedral. In 1983 there was a fire that almost completely destroyed the original equipment.

The start of construction can be dated to the year 1245; In the year Blankenberg was granted city rights, Count Heinrich III. von Sayn and his wife, Countess Mechthild von Meißen-Landsberg, established a Premonstratensian monastery within the city walls, which was occupied by Cistercian women soon after it was founded. The monastery church was elevated to an independent parish church in 1248, probably after its completion. The monastery was moved to Zissendorf in 1265, and the right to collate the parish church remained with the abbess until the 16th century.
