After the Second World War and during the period of German division, the mountain was in the GDR border restricted area and was therefore no longer accessible to the population from 1952. In 1996, the tower of the former monitoring system was converted into an observation tower, the tower of the unit. Connected with this is a refuge and an exhibition about the border installations, which can be visited all year round. From the Heldrastein you can enjoy a beautiful view.

From 504m high Heldrastein you have a look far into the country. Even if a few kilometers away, the Normannstein Castle above Treffurt can already be recognized. The Heldrastein is on the move. Lime is dissolved by the penetrating water into the rocky stone slopes and I gradually set individual rock shells in motion and at some point a plaice plunges down to the valley and tears more rocks with it.
