The last functioning tar smoldering plant in Central Europe is operated by a club and charcoal, wood vinegar and tar are produced with the double-walled tar smoldering kiln. The furnace is put into operation four times a year. On the site at the edge of the Rostock Heath is also a small museum, which gives an insight into the forestry, in technology and history of the wood harvesting and the military use of the heath from 1945 - 1999. Remnants of the military use are many fortified forest roads in the Rostock heath, which today serve well as cycle paths.
