The "Freienstein Castle" was first mentioned in 1297. It is still not clear who the builder of the castle was. It may have arisen in the wake of the dissolution of the Lorsch Imperial Abbey and the division of its property in the triangle of rulership between the Palatine Counts, the inns of Erbach and Kurmainz.
