The sandy, barren soil of the former military area represents a habitat for some animals and plants that has now become rather rare. A number of pools also offer spawning grounds for rare amphibians. At the entrance to the nature reserve - incidentally one of the few in Germany within a large city - visitors will find a small pavilion with a lot of information.

The parade ground is a nature reserve on a former military site in the middle of the city of Erlangen.
In the years 1890 to 1894, a 150-hectare parade ground was laid out next to a barracks for the Royal Bavarian Infantry Regiment No. 19. After World War II, the site was used by the American army until they left.
