If you want to spend the night up there, you should definitely call in advance and preferably from MON-FRI between 11 a.m. and 12 p.m., they have telephone hours and are best reachable, but otherwise they always try to call you back! Telephone number: +4369910812199
It's also best to ask if they need anything for the kitchen, provided you have space in your backpack - they also depend on such auxiliary services up here (due to the lack of a cable car or road).
Aja and the hut is open every year until October 26th.

    Usein kysytyt kysymykset

What are the most popular hiking routes to Schiestlhaus, and how difficult are they?

The Schiestlhaus is not accessible by car, so all routes require a significant hike. Common starting points include Seewiesen and Gasthaus Bodenbauer. The estimated hiking time from these trailheads is around 4.5 hours. These routes are generally considered challenging due to the elevation gain and rugged alpine terrain. While there isn't a specific 'beginner' trail, hikers should be prepared for a strenuous ascent.

Are there any family-friendly hiking options or trails suitable for beginners near Schiestlhaus?

The routes to Schiestlhaus are generally demanding, involving significant elevation gain and rugged alpine terrain, making them less suitable for very young children or absolute beginners. However, families with older, experienced children who are accustomed to mountain hiking may find the journey rewarding. There are no specific 'beginner' trails directly to the hut, but the hut itself is a great base for exploring the Hochschwab summit, which is only a 30-minute hike away and less strenuous once at the hut.

What are the parking options for trailheads leading to Schiestlhaus?

Parking is available at common trailheads such as Seewiesen and Gasthaus Bodenbauer. However, these parking areas can fill up quickly, especially during peak season and on weekends. Arriving early in the morning is highly recommended to secure a spot.

Is public transport available to reach the trailheads for Schiestlhaus?

While the hut itself is not accessible by public transport, you can research bus connections to the general area, such as Thörl, Seewiesen, or Gasthaus Bodenbauer. From these points, you would then begin your hike. It's advisable to check local bus schedules in advance, as services to remote mountain areas can be limited.

What is the best time of year to visit Schiestlhaus, and what are the seasonal conditions like?

The best time to visit is typically during the warmer months, from late spring to late autumn, when trails are generally clear of snow. The hut is usually open until late October. During winter, conditions can be very challenging, with heavy snow and ice, requiring specialized equipment and experience. A winter room is available outside the main season for experienced mountaineers.

Does Schiestlhaus offer accommodation, and what are the sleeping arrangements?

Yes, Schiestlhaus offers accommodation with 59 to 61 beds, including both private rooms and dormitories. It is highly recommended to call in advance to reserve your spot, especially during busy periods. The best time to reach them by phone is Monday to Friday between 11 a.m. and 12 p.m. You will need to bring your own sleeping bag liner for overnight stays.

Are dogs allowed at Schiestlhaus or on the trails leading to it?

While the trails in the Hochschwab region are generally accessible for dogs, it's crucial to check with the Schiestlhaus directly regarding their specific policy for dogs inside the hut, especially for overnight stays. Mountain huts often have restrictions or require dogs to stay in designated areas. Always keep your dog on a leash and be mindful of wildlife and other hikers.

What kind of food and drink can I expect at Schiestlhaus, and are there vegetarian options?

The kitchen at Schiestlhaus serves traditional local dishes and 'hut classics,' along with daily specials. Vegetarian options are readily available. The kitchen is typically open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m., offering a chance to refuel after your hike. They also have a sun terrace where you can enjoy your meal with panoramic views.

Are there any specific permits required for hiking in the Hochschwab mountain range or staying at Schiestlhaus?

Generally, no specific hiking permits are required for day hikes in the Hochschwab mountain range. However, if you plan to stay overnight at Schiestlhaus, it is essential to make a reservation in advance. There are no permits needed for the hut itself, but booking ensures you have a bed. Always respect local regulations and environmental protection guidelines.

What unique features does Schiestlhaus offer as the world's first high-alpine passive house?

Schiestlhaus is a pioneering example of sustainable alpine architecture. It operates with energy self-sufficiency, utilizing a photovoltaic system and a plant oil heating block power station. Due to its remote location without nearby water sources, it collects and treats rainwater for use, and wastewater undergoes biological cleaning and UV light disinfection. These features mean the hut has no shower facilities, and guests are asked to bring sleeping bag liners to conserve water.

What should I pack or wear for an ascent to Schiestlhaus?

Given the high-alpine environment, proper gear is crucial. You should pack layers of clothing suitable for varying weather conditions, including waterproof and windproof outer layers. Sturdy hiking boots are essential. Don't forget sun protection (hat, sunglasses, sunscreen), sufficient water, snacks, a first-aid kit, and a map or GPS device. For overnight stays, remember your sleeping bag liner.
