Around 1251, the square was called Hundisborch, and around 1410, Honsborch, derived from the name of the influential merchant family Van Honsborch. According to a 1678 record, this family owned a farm near St. Stephen's Gate. In the following centuries, up until around 1590, the market square was also called Cruys and Cruys Market, which indicates that a market cross may have stood in the center, a symbol of the granted market rights.
