Hiking through the Sea of Stone

Offering a true mix of landscapes, this six-day Tour is perfect for mountain climbers, lovers of Alpine huts and water rats—and guarantees a real adventure between the Königssee and Schönfeldspitze.

On this adventure, pure variety awaits you as you trek through forests and over rocks, into valleys and across high plains. You’ll climb big and small peaks alike, you’ll cool your feet in mountain lakes—and you’ll lay your head to rest in dreamlike environments as the world around Königssee, Schönfeldspitze and Watzmann enchants you.

On the fourth day, you’ll have a choice to make: Do you take the long, demanding trail or do you take the pleasure route? For ambitious mountain hikers, we have planned a challenging Tour with stage 4b being an alternative route from the Kärlingerhaus to the Riemanhaus. This route is guaranteed to pick up your heart rate as you ascend the Schönfeldspitze. For less experiences alpinists, we recommend the Normalweg (stage 4a) over the waves of the Stoney Sea, which also offers varied views.

No matter which route you choose, however, one thing is guaranteed: you will be amazed by the bizarre beauty of the rocks as you wander through the Sea of Stones. This barren plateau does not bear its name for nothing, after all. Just be mindful of the weather as fog and cold spells can fall at a moment’s notice; a phenomenon that invariably hinders orientation. As long as the weather stay fine, though; nothing will stand in the way of your dream adventure.
One more tip: Plan your Tour through the Steinerne Meer early as huts are in demand and quickly get booked up. You should also make reservations to make sure you get a place to sleep. Arrival and departure can be easily planned by public transport or by car. Start and end points are located directly at bus stops and parking lots (for which you have to pay). And with that, there’s nothing else to do, except to plan when you’re going to get started.
