On 8 June 1872 the municipality expressed for the first time the desire to establish a museum where the works acquired with the subversion of the assets of the suppressed religious bodies could be brought together. In fact, the act with which the municipal administration puts on the agenda the movement of the library from the former convents of San Filippo to San Domenico, together with the valuable paintings existing in the various municipal rooms, dates back to this date, to form a small picture gallery.

The history of the Bevagna picture gallery is similar to that of other Umbrian collections, formed with the acquisition of the works of art present in the religious buildings of the religious orders suppressed after the unification of Italy. The works on display were made between 1550 and 1750 and offer a broad testimony of artistic production and local devotion. The first nucleus was formed following the confiscation of ecclesiastical assets decided by the newborn Italian state in 1860. Later other works were added from local churches and from private donations.
