The Salzwedeler Tor is the only well-preserved of the four former city gates. It was built in the 16th century and was an important part of the city fortifications. The two mighty battery towers in front of the gate have a diameter of 9 and 18 meters. In 1907 the gate was opened by Prof. Dr. Otto Stiehl reconstructed. This is, among other things, The stepped gable above the gate entrance has been carefully recreated based on old models. A general repair was carried out from 1991 and the large bastion was comprehensively renovated in 2013.

A true piece of the Middle Ages from the 13th century can be found right next to the Salzwedel Gate. The Gate Mill—an overnight accommodation, inn, and rest stop—was one of the town's most important sources of income at the time and, until the end of the 19th century, the contact point for the surrounding villages to mill grain. The surrounding villages were obligated to have their grain milled here. The mill continued to operate until the second half of the 20th century.
