The so-called "Hamburg Firestorm" of July 1943 was a particularly gruesome event during World War II, in which around 35,000 people lost their lives due to extensive bombing and the resulting wildfires. Rothenburgsort and the surrounding districts, as sites of the armaments and port industries, were particularly hard hit and were almost completely destroyed. Sixty years later, the memorial "The Silent Angel," designed by Volker Lang, was dedicated in commemoration. It is a small, walk-in house in a clearing, reminiscent of the typical buildings of the workers' housing estates of the time. From the outside, it is simply designed. Four small windows on each of the narrow sides allow a view of the interior; tours are available upon request. On the white-painted interior walls, short literary recollections by contemporary witnesses can be read, providing fragments of a chronological history of the firestorm. Ferns are most abundant and diverse in the world's tropical rainforests. But here we are in the Fischbek Heath. I've never seen ferns this tall before, and I was amazed. Some of them towered about 2 meters high along the path.
