The name "North Sea port of Haithabu" arouses interest in the historical significance of Hollingstedt in the Middle Ages and during the Viking Age. The little church by the sea in Schobüll, a district of Husum, is an impressive early Gothic brick church from the 13th century. This church is not only known for its historic architecture, but also for its beautiful location directly on the North Sea coast. The church, also known as “ecclesiola sub mare”, has a rich interior. Particularly noteworthy are the apostle frieze, which depicts the 12 apostles as well as John the Baptist and Mary Magdalene, and the octagonal baptismal font from the 15th century. The Régence-style pulpit from 1735, carved by Jens Süncksen, is also a highlight of the church. Another interesting detail is the 17th century towel rack, which shows the baptism of Christ. The church is surrounded by an idyllic cemetery, which invites you to linger and offers a picturesque view of the North Sea.
