The Cathedral of Matera (Italian: Cattedrale della Madonna della Bruna e di Sant'Eustachio) is a Roman Catholic church in Matera, Italy. The cathedral of the Archdiocese of Matera-Irsina bears the title of a minor basilica. The church was built in the 13th century in the Apulian Romanesque style and stands on the highest point of the city between the two Sassi. Matera has been a European Capital of Culture since 2019, and the historic old town of Matera has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1993. The Sassi and the rock churches, as well as the many film sets, are remarkable. There are many stairs in Matera. The Gravina di Matera gorge can be crossed in about 3.5 hours to reach the rock caves on the other side. Matera has two districts: Sasso Barisano: Located in the northern part of the Sassi and is known for its impressive cave architecture and narrow streets. Sasso Caveoso: Located in the southern part of the Sassi and is characterized by its unique cave dwellings and natural surroundings.
