Königssee is a mountain lake located largely within Berchtesgaden National Park. Nestled between the steep slopes of the Watzmann and Hagen Mountains, this elongated lake, along with the smaller Obersee lake to the southeast—around which the Steinernes Meer forms the valley's edge—has a fjord-like character. From the Königssee parking lot, a path leads past picturesque boathouses into the national park. Past the former Café Malerwinkl, the walk leads to the so-called Malerwinkel (Painter's Corner). This hike is also very popular as a winter walk, as the path to Malerwinkl is cleared and gritted during these times.

We started at the Kehlstein bus parking lot to avoid the 24% gradient from Berchtesgaden. Maybe we should do the loop the other way around 🤷‍♂️, it seems easier since everyone else is going up the other side with 🚲. STRENUOUS (but doable with breaks at the viewpoints). The view at the top makes up for every drop of sweat. And after that, it's almost all downhill.
