After the spawning and breeding season, the water is "drained in a throttled manner" in order to reduce the nutrient content, promote the decomposition of the sludge and slow down the reefing of the pond. Regular draining also prevents the formation of large fish stocks, which are considered predators of endangered dragonfly and amphibian species.
