The climb towards the southwest is not very demanding, the asphalt is mostly good (in Redeyef it is sometimes really bad or non-existent). Lots of traffic in the form of mopeds, which are probably all driving to the mine. The best part of this section is at the southwest end, a breathtaking view 400m down to the desert and a spectacular descent and ascent, which makes this pass an absolute must-ride for everyone. The Redeyef Pass is also known as the "Rommelpiste" for reasons that cannot be researched. I deliberately did not call it that, as the pass was neither built by the German Wehrmacht nor played an important role for the Afrika Korps.

An overwhelming mountain pass, not many have made such a huge impression on me. The attraction here lies in the high limestone cliffs that fall over 600m onto a deep desert plain and whose colors come across magnificently. With every meter covered, new, great views emerge. The asphalt is quite new on the upper section (2025) and even smooth (in Tunisia this is otherwise almost only the case on large main roads). Only the lower 2km are not in good condition, but it is quite flat there. The climb is demanding, in less than 6km there is over 600 meters of elevation. I rode downhill here (towards the south) and did a big, fascinating round trip via the west back to Redeyef. The entire tour is set out in sections as a highlight. If you do it the other way around, you only have the steep climb here, otherwise you almost only ride downhill. A little further east is another pass, which for reasons that cannot be researched is also known as the "Rommelpiste" among expedition vehicle and motorcycle travelers. Since the pass was neither built by the German Wehrmacht nor played a significant role for the Afrika Korps, the name is rather inappropriate. The track or pass is unpaved and not really suitable for racing cyclists.

Mostly good but extremely rough asphalt. Very nice climb towards the northwest (sometimes quite steep). Toujane (according to maps, Toujene according to the town sign) is a beautiful Berber tourist town where a major battle took place in World War II. There was nothing going on here during the week in winter, but on a nice Sunday in winter there was quite a lot going on.

This mountain range marks the separation between the arid climate region in the north and the Sahara climate region in the south. Coming from the north, what's amazing is that there is no real pass; the route simply drops to reveal the immensity of the plains southward. There, a long-forgotten track deviates from the main road. Hidden from prying eyes, but with a fantastic view, you can pitch your tent and bask in the beauty of this place.

North of the C124, a dusty dirt path climbs up to a pass, leading to a beautiful valley with a stunning view of the mountain ridge. At the top of the pass, there is a natural platform on the right of the track. It's perfect for a tent. There might be workers going to work in the olive tree plantations below in the morning. Be ready for a stunning sunrise!

Coming from Mourales the road descends towards Gafsa with wide hairpin bends on the valley floor. The view from up there and as you descend towards the mountain range in front leaves you speechless.
