The bridge was built in 1365, making it the oldest covered wooden bridge in Europe and, with a length of 202.9 m, the second longest bridge of this type in Europe. It extends from the Lucerne Theater on the south bank to the Rathausquai and the St. Peterskapelle.

The Rathaussteg bridge over the Reuss in the Swiss city of Lucerne connects the Lucerne Theater on Bahnhofstrasse with the town hall in the old town.

The concrete girder bridge was rebuilt in 1961 on the old pile foundation of the previous bridge. The structure is adorned with ornate wrought iron railings and cast iron chandeliers above the roadway. The pier was extensively refurbished and strengthened in 2014.
