Well worth a visit is ‘Il Castello’, once the seat of the Balbiani counts, former feudal lords of Chiavenna. The historic Palazzo Balbiani dates back pre–1477, but all that remains from the original architecture is façade and two towers after the rest was demolished during the occupation of the Grisons and reconstructed in 1930. The Vione tower was part of the fortification system in the area between Mazzo and Grosio, built by the Venosta family in the Middle Ages. Like practically all the other castles in the valley, it was destroyed shortly after the Grisons from Switzerland conquered Valtellina in 1512. The tower had a lookout function and in fact offers a beautiful view.

It is assumed that the Castle of S. Pietro was mentioned in a peace treaty with Como in 1201. The certain date is that of its conquest in 1376 by order of Galeazzo Visconti, who extended his control over the entire Valtellina area. The structure of the Castle of S. Pietro was composed of two towers: a round one, completely collapsed and a rectangular one, the remains of which can still be admired. A little further down stood the Church of Saints Peter, Paul and Andrew, of which today we can admire the ruins that give it the name of Gesa Rota or Broken Church.

The path that starts from Traona to reach Domofole Castle is very dirty currently (June 2024). Furthermore, the area is very famous for being full of ticks so be extremely careful!
