A watchtower is said to have existed in Altenburg as early as Roman times. Around 750 the place is mentioned in the register of goods of the Fagana. In 1434, Count Otto II von Maxlrain acquired the Altenburg and enlarged it. In 1560, under Duke Albrecht of Bavaria, the Altenburg was converted into its present form.
