Συχνά ακούς το νερό πριν καν δεις σωστά την εγκατάσταση: Η Μεγάλη Κασκάδα (Große Kaskade) ήταν μέρος της ιδέας του πάρκου από την αρχή. Σχεδιάστηκε από τον Erwin Barth και τον Heinrich Seeling μεταξύ 1912 και 1913. Και οι δύο δημιούργησαν εδώ συνειδητά ένα αντίστοιχο του ήρεμου λιμανιού. Ενώ η λίμνη φαίνεται μάλλον ήρεμη και απλωμένη, η κασκάδα φέρνει κίνηση στο χώρο. Αυτό είχε και πρακτικό όφελος: Το κινούμενο, και επομένως εμπλουτισμένο με οξυγόνο νερό, βοήθησε στη μείωση του έντονου σχηματισμού φυκιών στη λίμνη Lietzensee. Ο Barth σχεδίασε μια σαφώς συμμετρική εγκατάσταση. Στην κορυφή υπάρχει ένα στηθαίο από ψαμμίτη, κάτω από το οποίο ξεκινά η κασκάδα, κατασκευασμένη από σκυρόδεμα και ασβεστόλιθο. Από μια ημικυκλική δεξαμενή, το νερό ρέει προς τα κάτω σε πολλά επίπεδα. Ρέει πάνω από μικρούς καταρράκτες, βεράντες και συνολικά εννέα δεξαμενές, μέχρι που τελικά φτάνει στη λίμνη. Τα σχήματα είναι απλά, σχεδόν αυστηρά. Ακριβώς αυτό είναι χαρακτηριστικό της εποχής λίγο πριν τον Α' Παγκόσμιο Πόλεμο. Απομακρύνθηκαν από την παιχνιδιάρικη διακόσμηση και εστίασαν περισσότερο σε καθαρές γραμμές και μεγάλες φόρμες. The cascades (there are two, another on the north bank) were created in 1912-13 by Erwin Barth and Heinrich Seeling. They were intended to enrich the lake water with oxygen and reduce the algae growth in the lake. A great design solution to the problem. As pollution has increased over the decades, there are now additional oxygen enrichments near the shore of the lake. These can be easily recognized by the constant bubbling.
