The city was founded by the founding of an ancient fortress on a strategically located hill east of the current city center. No remains of this structure remain today. In Byzantine times, a castle was built on the same spot, around which the historic upper town, which still exists today, developed. The city is located on the coast of the Ionian Sea between Pyrgos in the north, 65 km away, and Pylos in the south. To the east of the city, the narrow coastal plain quickly turns into a karst hilly landscape. Kyparissia was the capital of the former province of Tryfilia.

The old water mill has been out of use for over 50 years, but is still functional. We had barely entered the mill and shown interest in it when the owner got it running for us. There is a lovely little shop attached, which sells things like pasta made from the flour milled here, as well as many other specialties. On the first floor there is a small cafe, where a small cast-iron oven provided cozy warmth in February. Our purchases and the visit to the cafe were on the higher end of the price range, but the loving care of the couple who run it more than made up for that. We were also invited to pick oranges in the garden!
