The riverside village of Shilovo in the Voronezh district was inhabited in the 1620s. The 1629 Census Book mentions the "village of Shilova near the Shilovo settlement." A church appeared here no earlier than the mid-17th century, as the 1648 Census Book of the Voronezh District still lists Shilovo as a village. The stone church in the village of Shilovo was built in 1845 and dedicated to Saint Mitrophan of Voronezh. The church had a chapel dedicated to the Apostle and Evangelist John the Theologian. At that time, Shilovo had 60 households, home to 519 people of both sexes, but the parish also included 20 households from the village of Trushkina, with 159 people. According to archives from 1911, the church in Shilovo was "built by the diligence of parishioners with contributions from outsiders. It is stone, with a similar bell tower and fence, covered with iron. It has sufficient furnishings. The staff includes a priest and one psalm-reader. The rectory is wooden, built by the diligence of parishioners in 1884 and 1907. It is the property of the church. An inventory of church property was certified in 1848 and is preserved intact. Copies of the registers of births are intact from 1780. Confession lists are intact from 1820. The library contains 60 volumes." By 1911, another chapel was added to the Mitrofanovskaya Church – dedicated to the Holy Great Martyr Theodore Tyrone. The village was then part of the Chizhovskaya Volost (district) of the Voronezh District. The village had a zemstvo school, opened in 1894, with an enrollment of 80 boys and 20 girls. Priest Pavel Ustinovsky taught Religious Studies at the school. The Mitrofanovskaya Church in the village of Shilovo was closed in the 1930s. During the Great Patriotic War, from June 1942 to January 1943, when fierce fighting raged near the village, the church was almost completely destroyed. Only the bell tower survived, standing alone on the right bank of the reservoir, near the unfinished nuclear power plant. The village of Shilovo, part of the Khokholsky District, was liquidated in 1976 due to the start of construction of the nuclear power plant, and its residents were relocated. The new urban-type settlement that emerged during the construction was named Shilovo. Currently, the bell tower of the Mitrofanovsky Church, by the decree of the Voronezh Region Administration dated August 14, 1995, No. 850, is an object of historical and cultural heritage of regional significance.

Few people know about the monument at the Shilovsky bridgehead (Mass Grave No. 113) due to its location. Those who finally manage to visit remain deeply impressed by both the monument and the stories of the events that took place there in July 1942. On the southeastern edge of the Shilovsky forest, where the buildings of the unfinished nuclear power plant now stand, stood the village of Shilovo, known since the early 17th century. Across a ravine, stood the village of Trushkino. The settlements were completely destroyed in a few days in July 1942. The site of Trushkino is now occupied by a ravine of the same name. Before the war, the distance from the village of Shilovo to the Voronezh city limits was several kilometers. The Nazis, advancing on Voronezh in early July 1942, crossed the Don River near the village of Malyshevo and believed the road to Voronezh was now open. However, they encountered fierce resistance near the village of Shilovo. Although our forces were small, and the reserves allocated by General Headquarters were still approaching, the enemy's path was blocked by units of the 232nd Rifle Division, the 3rd Air Defense Division, and the 110th Tank Brigade. The Red Army suffered significant losses while holding the bridgehead. Therefore, the Shilovo Bridgehead is one of the main memorial sites for the battle for Voronezh. The Shilovo Bridgehead's landscape is unique, with stunning views and a beautiful panorama of the surrounding area. The grave of poet Pavel Vintman, who valiantly fought for Voronezh and died on July 21, 1942, is also located here. The first reconstruction of the memorial took place in the early 2000s. The names of the bridgehead defenders were carved into granite slabs. An obelisk was erected at the grave. At its top are the metal numbers "1941" and "1945," and at the bottom is the inscription "Shilovsky Bridgehead 1942-1943." To the right of the obelisk, on a low wall, is the inscription "People, remember," and next to it are five two-meter-high slabs bearing the names of the bridgehead defenders. Opposite the mass grave, a monument was erected, considered one of the most original structures dedicated to the Great Patriotic War in Voronezh. According to sculptor Sushkov, soldiers of different branches, genders, and ages appear to emerge from the river onto dry land. Benches were also installed on the memorial grounds, and the paths were paved.

The Venevitinov Estate in Novozhivotinny is located on the banks of the Don River, adding to its picturesque charm. The architectural and cultural complex also includes a park with many attractions. A snow-white gazebo overlooks the Don River. It was recently built; a brick structure once stood on this site, but it no longer stands. Several century-old oak trees provide ample shade and create a special atmosphere. All the lawns are in excellent condition and meticulously maintained. Protected by the shade of oaks and other plants, they don't turn yellow or deteriorate until late autumn. There's a small pond, attractively located in the center of the park. In the evenings, antique-style lanterns illuminate. If you don't bring your cell phone, you'll be transported back in time a couple of centuries.

... I'll tell you frankly, I'm such a lover of the countryside that I quickly forget all my troubles to indulge in pleasure, and there's plenty to enjoy here. Every time I cross the Don, I stop halfway across the bridge to admire this wondrous river, which the eye would like to follow to its very mouth, flowing without a sound, as peacefully as happiness itself. -- Venevitinov D.
