Cagliari's landmark is the imposing Cathedral of Santa Maria. It was built in the 13th century but has undergone numerous structural alterations over the years. It incorporates Romantic and Baroque styles, as well as the Pisan style. The current façade recalls the cathedral's original Romantic appearance, but the Baroque style still dominates the interior. A tour of the church reveals magnificent, detailed paintings on the ceiling, imposing sculptures, and a marble pulpit that once stood in Pisa Cathedral. In the crypt, you can marvel at around 300 burial chambers.

The tower got its name from a marble elephant statue above the gate. How could it be otherwise: From the tower, you can also enjoy a magnificent panoramic view of Cagliari and Sardinia. The price for this view is almost 120 steps.

Cagliari's Palazzo Civico, the seat of the Sardinian capital, rises like a bastion of white stone, elegant in its shapes and colors, a clear sail to the sea. It hasn't always stood where it stands today: at 145 Via Roma, or more precisely, it hasn't always been the seat of the city administration. Its original location was in the heart of Castello, in the upper, fortified part of the city, where it could be best defended: in Piazza Palazzo. It was the intuition of Ottone Bacaredda, the far-sighted mayor of a Cagliari that, although still in the 19th century, was already looking toward the next, to move the headquarters of the city's most important institution to a geographically opposite location: to Via Roma, in the Marina district, so popular but already striving for elegance, a bourgeois salon, overlooking the sea, facing outwards rather than protected from it as it had been until then.

The Tower of San Pancrazio is one of Cagliari's most fascinating medieval relics. Built in 1305 by the Pisans, it still dominates the Castello district with its imposing structure of pale limestone. Standing approximately 36 meters tall, it served as a watchtower and defense and was part of the city's fortified system. Climbing to the top offers spectacular views of Cagliari and the sea, perfect for understanding the strategic role it played over the centuries. A place that combines history, architecture, and panoramic views in a single glance.

This place is a good example of how conservation can be overdone. Driving along the dam allows you to get closer to the flamingos than walking or cycling through the so-called park. I was disappointed. It's better to go to the zoo to see the flamingos.

Called Krly by the Phoenicians, Cagliari has a very ancient history, chapters of which can still be discovered in the streets of the old city. About 120 years ago the places of city power were moved from the old Castello district to the more modern area near the port, but the historical part of the city is still of great charm.
