Very interesting village. You can see that the houses are being rebuilt in some places. Now in May there is an incredibly diverse array of natural flowers to admire.

The first written records of Perithia date back to the 14th century. However, it is assumed that Perithia was inhabited for much longer. In its heyday, Perithia was one of the wealthiest places on the island and had up to 1,200 inhabitants. There were around 130 houses and eight churches. The location of the town at around 450 meters originally offered protection from pirate attacks and the malaria that was rampant on the coast at the time. Livestock farming was an important industry, other agriculture was mainly only possible in fields in the lower coastal region. In the 19th century, there were hardly any pirate attacks and more and more people spent the winter on the coast and only the malaria-prone summer months in Palea Peritheia. The town was gradually abandoned in the 1960s after the risk of malaria on the Greek islands had been averted and tourism provided jobs on the coast. Source: Wikipedia

It is definitely worth exploring this place in more detail. Lots of nice little shops and good restaurants. The famous Twin Bay is easy to reach. Good shoes are recommended, though.

The monks' cells (and guest accommodation) cling to the rock like swallows' nests and are supported from below with sticks - adventurous and spectacular. The monastery has lunchtime rest from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. and the legs must be covered, but for women not by trousers but by a skirt. You can borrow these at the entrance. Besides, I wouldn't think it's such a tragedy to be here during closing times. It's more worth seeing from the outside anyway
