Fort Feyzin is a former military fort built after the war of 1870; there are several all around Lyon. The Solaize milestone is a column cut from choin de Fay, a variety of hard limestone extracted upstream of the Rhône, in the quarry of the hamlet of Fay, commune of Peyrieu in Ain. It bears an inscription naming the Emperor Claudius: Ti (berius) Claudius Drusi f (ilius) / Caesar August (us) / Germanicus, with the abbreviations giving its full title: pont (ifex) max (imus) tr (ibunicia) pot (estate) III / imp (erator) III co (n) s (ul) III p (ater) p (atriae) / VII, which corresponds to the year 43, the earliest known date indicating the start of Roman exploitation of this career. This terminal also constitutes an element of archaeological dating for the construction of the monuments of Lugdunum such as the ancient theater of Fourvière, with the use of the choin de Fay.
