The castle and especially the stairwell of this castle is one of the gems of the OBERSCHWÄBISCHEN BAROCKSTRASSE. Around the back of the castle is an attractive spa park with a playground

Wurzach Castle (1723-1728) in the city center boasts one of the most beautiful Baroque staircases in southern Germany. It is considered a jewel on the Upper Swabian Baroque Route. The elegantly curved staircase cleverly ascends a considerable height to the ceiling fresco, depicting an ancient heaven of the gods. The impressive painting centers on the legend of Hercules. Commissioned by the House of Waldburg-Zeil-Wurzach, it was likely significantly influenced by Italian artists. The castle courtyard is flanked by two guardhouses, the "Hohes Haus" (High House) to the west and the "Rentamt" (Tax Office), built in 1691, to the east. This wing also houses the old castle chapel, first mentioned in 1422. To the left in the choir is the tomb of George I of Waldburg, "Jörg with the pretty hair," who died in 1467. The Baroque staircase is open daily from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. (free entry) (Source: https://www.oberschwaben-tourismus.de/attraktionen/barocktreppenhaus-wurzacher-schloss-759edc50a8)

The Waldenburg region became a fief of the noble Hohenlohe family around 1250. The first documented mention of a castle dates back to 1253. Waldenburg was granted town rights as early as 1330. It was converted into a castle in the 16th century, although some of the changes were reversed in the 18th century. The building became the headquarters of one of the Hohenlohe lines in 1553. The keep, also known as the Männlesturm (Männles Tower), received its present form in 1576. Further structural changes were made in the early 17th century, with Heinrich Schickhardt serving as an advisor. The castle stood empty from 1679 onwards, as the Hohenlohe-Waldenburg line died out. The castle church of St. Michael was built by master stucco worker Christian Dornacher in 1781 and 1782. Count Eberhard von Hohenlohe-Waldenburg had Pfedelbach Castle built from 1568 to 1572 on the walls of an older ministerial castle as a winter residence, as the climate in Pfedelbach was milder than that up in Waldenburg. In the 19th century, the castle was extensively renovated by a new Hohenlohe-Waldenburg line created through inheritance. The castle, along with almost 80 percent of the entire town area, was destroyed by artillery fire in 1945. Reconstruction took place from 1948 to 1963. Hans Gottfried von Stockhausen (* May 12, 1920 at Trendelburg Castle; † January 8, 2010 in Remshalden-Buoch) was a German stained-glass artist, painter, and draftsman. He became known primarily for his over 500 church windows and architectural works, both at home and abroad. Von Stockhausen maintained his studio at Waldenburg Castle, where he frequently exhibited his works to the public. Source: Wikipedia.

The castle was built between 1723 and 1728 by Count Ernst Jakob Truchsess von Waldburg-Zeil-Wurzach. For two centuries it was the residence of the Wurzach line of the noble family and developed into a center of courtly music and painting. In 1922 the Salvatorians bought Wurzach Castle and built a Latin school with a boys' boarding school there. Operations began in 1924 and the new school grew very quickly. On November 28, 1937, the Salvator College was prohibited from accepting any more students due to National Socialist education policy. It soon had to cease its school operations and the large building was practically empty. In September 1940, the Biberach Army Base Administration rented the castle for use as a prison camp. From 1940 to 1945 Wurzach Castle was part of the National Socialist camp system as the location of three camps. There was also a so-called military training camp in the castle park. The prisoners in Wurzach were relatively safe. They were liberated by the French army on April 28, 1945. 1 Ιουλίου 2023, Ratzenried Castle Ruins

Story. The castle was probably built at the beginning of the 12th century, in 1145 the Lords of Ratzenried were first mentioned. The reason for its construction was possibly the same as that of Praßberg Castle near Wangen in the Allgäu, which was begun in 1123. It was intended to secure the fiefs of the St. Gallen monastery in the region and collect the royalties from the courts. The lords of Ratzenried were also servants of the monastery. The Ratzenrieders died out at the end of the 13th century, but the new lords of the castle also called themselves von Ratzenried, they lost the castle again around 1350 and moved to the Ostallgäu. From 1353 the lords of Molpertshausen sat at the castle, in 1369 Hans von Molpertshausen was officially enfeoffed with the lordship by the St. Gallen abbot. About ten years later, the castle had to be sold again, among other owners it belonged to the Humpis of Ravensburg from 1453. They also called themselves Humpis von Ratzenried from the 16th century. Jos Humpis von Ratzenried had the castle restored in 1502 for 11,000 guilders, as it had collapsed down to the walls. They owned the castle until 1647. Razenried Castle was burned down by the Swedes during the Thirty Years' War in 1632 and was not rebuilt for cost reasons. In 1806 the castle passed to the Kingdom of Bavaria, which ceded the Ratzenried dominion to Württemberg in 1810. The complex came from him in 1813 to the Counts of Beroldingen, and in 1908 the Counts of Waldburg-Zeil inherited the castle. Source: Wikipedia
