The Riddagshausen nature reserve covers an area of approximately 526 hectares. Waters and wet meadows provide habitat for many bird species, as well as fish and amphibians.

The approximately two-hectare city moat is located in the heart of Wolfenbüttel. The body of water, which is the size of two large football stadiums, is used for a variety of purposes, which, however, also results in a lack of suitable refuges for rare (aquatic) animals and plants. And: Feeding waterfowl, as well as branches falling into the city moat, results in too many nutrients in the water. This has a negative impact on water quality and aquatic organisms, says Udo Berger, chairman of the angling club. The extensive pond landscape in Riddagshausen is the result of the work of the Cistercian monks, who drained the then very swampy area and created fish ponds. Of the original 28 ponds, 11 still exist today, of which the Mittelteich and Kreuzteich (between which the excellent path marked here runs) are among the largest. The ponds are home to a rich variety of flora and fauna.
