The SEO Thessaloniki Refuge is located at an altitude of 1,000 meters, nestled in a beautiful forest of beech and chestnut trees. It is typically open on weekends and holidays, offering a cozy spot for hikers to rest, enjoy a coffee, or eat a hot meal. The facility can accommodate up to 22 people for overnight stays in bunk beds, provided you book in advance with the SEO Thessaloniki club. It serves as a critical junction for trails leading to the Kolosourtis peak, the Icemakers' path, and the "Paliomilos" route. The refuge provides a reliable water source and shelter, making it the most popular meeting point for the local hiking community.

Finish Parcours #TCRNo9 // Thessaloniki

TCRNo9 finishes on the shores of the Aegean Sea, where the city of Thessaloniki marks the end of the adventure for our successful riders, having started thousands of kilometres away on the edge of western Europe. The history of the city is a rich tapestry of radicalism and anarchy, borne from its place on the historical frontier of Europe and Asia, and mirrored in the architecture we see today. At its heart lies the White Tower, which in its various guises — Byzantine, Ottoman, and modern Greek — has stood witness to this transient border since the 12th Century. Here our riders will finish, and have the opportunity to dip their wheels into the Aegean, signalling the end of their Transcontinental journey, and the chance to rest their weary bodies.

A beautiful path from the tarmacked road leading to Ailias church at the summit of Omvrianos. Church and shelter as well.

The relatively well-preserved Rentina castle complex served not only as a defensive structure for the respective rulers but also as a strategic base in the Mygdonian Basin and thus also monitored the Via Egnatia running in the valley in the easternmost area of the region of Thessalonikon and the adjacent region of Strymonikon, especially during the last 200 years of the Byzantine Empire. References to the last group of soldiers who served at Rentina are reflected in the notes of Megas Domestikos, who as a participant observer recorded in his notes in July - August 1334: "between Thessaloniki and the Fort Rentina on a hill on the shore of the lake Bolbi, the Emperor Andronikos III had his army raised in a certain village known as the Cretan, inhabited by an army of Cretans who had risen against the Emperor for some reason and then moved away from the island were. The ruins of this fortification are on the top of a hill on the western side of the Strait of Rendina, which also protected the Byzantine settlement that was once here. Construction of the fortifications in the area began around AD 450. During the reign of Justinian (527-565), the fortifications were further strengthened. The settlement flourished again in the years of Paleologos during the 14th century, so the walls were repaired and the temple in the rear, eastern part of the settlement was built in the shape of a cross. The settlement was probably abandoned in the 15th century, in the early years of the Ottoman occupation, as it had already lost its strategic importance and the Turks chose neighboring Volvi as a site for a settlement.
