However, the constantly damp clay soil was neither suitable for arable farming nor for fodder production. Mofettes are rising bubbles of CO2 that smell like sulfur. Monks used to have a monastery on this site which no longer exists as they may all have died from carbon dioxide poisoning. The Laacher See is located in the caldera of a 13,000 year old dormant volcano that is not yet extinct.

The third station on the Geo-Route "L" (Laacher See) refers to the mofettes, small gas bubbles that bubble up in the water of the lake. They show that the subsoil is still volcanically active.
