The Aartalsee is located in the upper Aartal in the communities of Bischoffen and Hohenahr in the Lahn-Dill district, north of its district town of Wetzlar and northwest of Gießen in Hesse. The Aartalsperre damms the Aar in its upper section west of the Niederweidbach basin and forms an artificially created lake in the southern Gladenbach mountains. The dam mainly serves to protect the Aar and Dill from flooding. Other uses include low water elevation, power generation, fishing and recreational recreation.
