The castle was built in 1065 to protect the Lorsch monastery. Its original name was Burcheldon. The name Starkimberg was first mentioned in 1206. In the monastery's eventful history, the castle always offered refuge and protection for the monks. As the second strongest fortress in the Electorate of Mainz, it covered the Mainzer Bergstrasse. In 1765, the castle was abandoned and fell into disrepair. On Wednesday, October 22, 1924, the dilapidated keep of the Starkenburg was blown up at 2:45 p.m. The demolition of the building, with walls up to three meters thick in the basement, was a major operation: 1,500 cubic meters of stone had to be blown away. While the demolition of the old keep, which was originally 28 metres high, had been unavoidable due to its structural condition, the construction of the new keep at another location, which was completed by 1930 (with the exception of the tower roof, which was only added in 1957), was an avoidable violation of the interests of monument protection.

The Weinheim Castle Park invites you to take relaxing walks. With its exotic, old trees, flowers and enchanting lines of sight, the castle park offers an unforgettable experience. The castle park, laid out in the style of an English garden, is a place of rest and relaxation for some, but an island of exotic beauty with rare and sometimes very old trees for others. Rhododendrons and yews as well as box, holly and chestnuts characterize the picture as well as extensive lawns. The highlights are the largest cedar in Germany in the Kleiner Schlosspark, the medicinal herb garden at the Blauen Hut, the mausoleum of the von Berckheim family from 1908/13 in the southeast corner and the historical and modern sculptures. The castle park is a well-tended, spacious park landscape with valuable trees and a beautiful pond. The huge rhododendrons and yew bushes and the largest Lebanon cedar in Germany are impressive. Thanks to the mild climate on the mountain road, all kinds of plants that were originally native to the Mediterranean thrive here. The medicinal plant garden is also located within the castle park. Opening times: open daily from 7:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. - free admission https://www.weinheim.de/746770.html

Built after 1100 as a protective castle for the Lorsch Monastery, the Windeck was destroyed at the end of the 17th century. The castle ruins have been owned by the city of Weinheim since 1978. The spiral staircase set into the wall of the keep is an architectural rarity. From here you have a fantastic view of the old town of Weinheim! There are different ways up here. The old Burgweg and the stairs from the Gerberviertel are the car-free entrances. There is a good information board on site. You can find out more about the castle here: https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Burg_Windeck_(Weinheim) In addition to the beer garden, which is open in the summer months, there is also the "Burgschänke" at the castle. You can find information about stopping here: https://www.burgruinewindeck.de/
