Lake Mercer Park Loop offers an enjoyable hiking and bike experience with its combination of paved and gravel paths. You’ll find occasional side trails that lead to the lake by dirt paths, all boasting stunning views. This easy trail features several potential exit points near residential areas. Among the points of interest are a couple of bridges crossing creeks, the lake itself, a large dam, and facilities conveniently located near the parking area. This trail attracts hikers, cyclists, and joggers alike. If you decide to bring your dog, be sure to keep it leashed at all times, as per park regulations, as there are other dogs. This loop is perfect for testing out new gear and for core strength training in preparation for larger trips.

The Bluemont Caboose, now housed on a specially built rail bed behind the Bluemont Community Center, is a historical bit of the Washington and Old Dominion Railroad's (W&OD) legacy. Once a key transportation corridor in Northern Virginia, the W&OD connected Alexandria to Bluemont at the Blue Ridge Mountains' base. The railway provided a boost in regional development, agriculture, and tourism from 1859 until its closure in 1968. After the railroad tracks were removed, much of the route was transformed into rail trails. The Bluemont Citizens Association, in collaboration with the county Department of Parks and Recreation, restored the caboose into a museum showcasing railroad memorabilia and community history.

Nice place to walk, you can rent a boat as well.

Built in 1758, Mount Vernon was the home and plantation of the first president of the United States – George Washington. The wooden house and its sprawling grounds are a National Historic Landmark. You can visit the estate. Tickets are $28 for adults or you can visit the shop and cafe for free.

Dyke Marsh is teeming with diverse plant and wildlife. It's one of the largest mudflats in the DC area, made up of 380 acres (1.5 km2) of floodplain, swamp forest, and tidal marsh that were formed several thousand years ago. If you enjoy bird watching, you'll love it here! The lower Potomac lies on the migration route for many waterfowl. Over 300 species of birds have been spotted at the wildlife preserve. You might catch a glimpse of beavers too.

This spot near the main boat launch offers a great view of Burke Lake, Burke Lake Park, and the Vesper Island State Waterfowl Refuge. There's also lots of parking, picnic areas, restrooms, and water fountains here.
