The massive medieval fortress of Rocca al Mare, now more commonly known as Koules, stands near the old Venetian harbor of the capital city of Heraklion. The Koules fortress is one of the main symbols of the Cretan capital.

The street has been faithfully restored to its original appearance during the time of the Order of St. John. Unlike all other tourist streets in the city, there are no souvenir shops or restaurants here. This makes it particularly worth seeing.

A beautiful old town with lots to discover. It's best to park in the free car park outside and then go in. The many alleys with cafes, restaurants and nice shops look very beautiful. There's also plenty of culture with the archaeological museum, Casa Romana and Odeon. There are lots of boats at the port where you can book excursions. Unfortunately the castle is currently closed for renovations.
