The Storms River Mouth suspension bridge marks the start of the Dolphin Hiking Trail. The hike to the suspension bridge is therefore called the Storms River Mouth Trail (2 km). From the starting point, it's about a half-hour hike to the bridge. It's a walk along the cliffs and through the woods, but on a constructed wooden path.

Worth the hike

A great hike, but the description "moderately difficult hike, no special skills required" is completely inaccurate. This requires some climbing skills, and it's not for those with height issues. However, the panorama is breathtaking. We managed the hike in 5 hours, even though we're quite fit. So, it's not for casual walkers.

I completed the trail in January 2025, from about 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. in sunshine. I'm 70, do a 7 km walk on flat land about five times a week at a brisk pace, play tennis, and am quite fit for my age. To describe the "Platteklipp Gorge Hiking Trail" as challenging is, to say the least, an understatement. It's definitely not a nature-oriented hiking trail like you'd imagine in the Allgäu region, for example. The terrain consists exclusively!!!! of boulders in the "Fred Flintstone" design, often with footholds of 40-50 cm! At times, I had to negotiate the incline in the upper switchbacks on all fours. Every now and then, there's a "railing" made of thin barbed wire. Very user-friendly🙈 When I reached the top, I was completely exhausted. If someone were to give up due to exhaustion or injury, I can hardly imagine being rescued by stretcher. If the way up was already a challenge, the way down would probably be even more challenging. In any case, a way back down beyond the cable car would have been unimaginable for me. Of course, this would be a different prospect at a much younger age, that's for sure. The scenic experience and the view of Cape Town are, however, without a doubt breathtaking. I must strongly advise older people who only occasionally hike on relatively flat terrain, perhaps with a high BMI and/or even classic "rubber potatoes" who just want to "hike" up Table Mountain!!!! against Platteklip Gorge.

We were there in January 2025. It was a very nice and easy hike. We started in Wildernes, where the wooden walkways on the beach were unfortunately closed and no longer accessible. Further up on the Kingfisher Trail everything was fine again. A bridge was closed at the waterfall. Otherwise everything was great and well developed. It's best to pack swimwear

The time given on Komoot is extremely wrong, much too short! At the start of the tour there is a sign with the time given as 3:40 hours, we needed 1:40 on the way there and 1:15 on the way back. Then there is the rest stop at the waterfall. It is not always clear where it is best to walk over the rocks. The yellow markings are not always there or visible. We found it easier on the way back, so we were faster. Sturdy shoes highly recommended
