This extension of the Walden-Wallkill Rail Trail is a much tighter trail and is unpaved. It isn't super rugged, but there are some roots and rocks along the trail that make it more technical than its longer and paved counterpart to the south.

The grassy meadow trails at Shawangunk Grasslands National Wildlife Refuge are managed by the United States Fish and Wildlife Service and are a super popular spot for quiet hiking and trail running. There are open views almost the entire time, and there's always a good chance of seeing wildlife out on the paths (namely migratory bird species).
