The Buchkammerfels is located in the foothills of the Heidenberg, south of the Drachenfels castle ruins and southeast of the municipality of Busenberg. It is a special cultural monument, also known as the Heidenkammern (Heathen Chambers). The origin and function of the three artificially created, inaccessible rock chambers are still not fully understood. However, it is assumed that they were either outposts or guard posts for Drachenfels Castle, or that the chambers served as a prison for the castle.

It looks dangerous, but it isn't. Great tour!

You get up close and personal with the rocks.

Like the Luitpoldfelsen and the Schillerwand, the "Broken Rock" is officially listed as a natural monument in Pirmasens. All three are located on Glasberg.

The Buchkammerfels is accessible from the mountain. After crossing a crevice, you can walk almost to the very top, from where you have a beautiful view, including views of Drachenfels Castle. The entrance to the eponymous chambers is located eight meters above the ground on a small ledge on the almost vertical north face of the rock. With a little practice, you can also climb up here without safety equipment. However, this is not without danger, especially the descent. If in doubt, take a look at my photos. There are four chambers and a few peepholes, three of which face the south side.

Those who can climb can look at the chambers. I can't and only saw them from the outside

Historians are still puzzling over the age and function of the four rock chambers, hewn out of the rock at a height of eight meters. Although the year 1678 is carved into one of the chambers, it is assumed that they existed before 1523. In 1678, one hundred and fifty years after the destruction of the Drachenfels, the French Reunion War raged in the Palatinate, and it is suspected that the inhabitants carved this date into their rock chambers to commemorate the protection and hiding places they offered. Such rock chambers are unique in the entire Wasgau region and do not occur in this form on the nearby Drachenfels or its neighboring castles. The earliest documented evidence of the existence of the book chambers dates back to 1635, where it is stated that the Drachenfels dynasty maintained three prisons here. However, historians consider this statement just as dubious as the idea that the rock chambers served as observation posts for the Drachenfels, which is visible from here. Another theory is that they were merely a hiding place for valuable items from the Drachenfels, which could be used in the event of an impending siege. Be that as it may, the book chambers on the Heidenberg remain mysterious, not least because to date there are no archaeological finds from the Heidenberg that could provide any clues about their function or actual age.
