Die Sint Jacobskerk wurde in der Zeit von 1308 bis 1328 erbaut. Die Kirche wurde um 1500 durch eine kreuzförmige Kirche erweitert und 1558 erneut vergrößert.
Im Jahr 1911 wurden Kirche und Turm durch einen Brand weitgehend zerstört. Der Wiederaufbau wurde 1915 abgeschlossen. Im Jahr 1954 wurde die Kirche aufgrund der schweren Kriegsschäden von 1944 wiederhergestellt.
Die letzte Restaurierung erfolgte im Jahr 1998. Der Turm gehört nicht der Kirche, sondern der Stadt Vlissingen.
