Auf dem Meeresgrund lagerten sich Kreidemassen ab, die, einmal der Luft ausgesetzt, den dominierenden Felsen des Loiretals bildeten: den Tuffeau. Dieser weiche Stein, aber ausreichend hart, wurde beim Bau der elegantesten Schlösser der Loire verwendet.
Die Steinbrüche wurden schließlich durchnässt und aufgegeben.
