Im 15. Jahrhundert mußte der Wald als Rohstofflieferant für den Bau der portugiesischen Schiffe herhalten. Heute ist er Jagdschutz- und Erholungsgebiet, wo sich die heimische Flora und Fauna weitestgehend unbeschwert entfalten kann.
Es gibt 6 Wanderwege, wovon sich einige auch für Mountainbike-Touren eignen, einen Picknickplatz mit Grillmöglichkeit, einen Trimm-dich-Pfad mit 14 Übungsstationen, sowie eine öffentliche Toilette und ein Kinderspielplatz.
