Oktober 1914 König Ferdinand I. von Rumänien, und seiner Frau Maria war der Auslöser für den Bau der neuen Dreifaltigkeitskathedrale im Zentrum der Zitadelle von Alba Iulia in den Jahren 1921 und 1922. Durch die Wirren des Ersten Weltkriegs verzögert, fand Ferdinands und Marias feierliche Krönung am 15. Oktober 1922 hier statt.
