Embark on the Lake Blanche Trail, a difficult 7.0-mile (11.3 km) hike that promises a rewarding journey through Big Cottonwood Canyon. You will ascend through diverse terrain, from shaded forests of scrub oak and aspen to open canyon meadows, before reaching significant quartzite rock formations. The highlight is undoubtedly Lake Blanche itself, nestled in a glacial basin, with the iconic Sundial Peak majestically reflecting in its waters after a challenging 5 hours and 22 minutes of hiking.
Prepare for a consistent and often steep uphill climb, gaining 2718 feet (828 metres) in elevation, with the trail becoming increasingly rocky and exposed as you near the lake. Be mindful of the altitude, which approaches 9,000 feet at the lake, and consider starting early to allow ample time for this demanding route.
