What are the parking options available near the Engelse Schans Fortification and Lookout Tower?

The Engelse Schans is located along Schansweg in Lievelde, and there are usually convenient parking options available nearby. What historical significance does the Engelse Schans hold beyond the Siege of Grol?

Beyond its crucial role in the 1627 Siege of Grol during the Eighty Years' War, the Engelse Schans represents a broader historical context of 17th-century military engineering and siege warfare. It's an example of a 'sconce' or 'redoubt,' a temporary field fortification designed to protect troops and artillery. Its reconstruction in 2002 highlights efforts to preserve and educate about this period of Dutch history.
