    Ein „Chemin de halage“, im deutschen „Treidelpfad“, der gleich neben dem Bett des Flusses oder Kanals die Wasserstraße begleitet, war in früheren Zeiten unverzichtbarer Bestandteil der Verkehrsinfrastruktur. Bevor nämlich sich die Schiffe mit Motorkraft fortbewegen konnten, waren es Pferde, die entlang des Ufers liefen und das Schiff gegen die Strömung gezogen haben. Dies wurde „treideln“ genannt, und so kamen die „Treidelpfade“ zu ihrem bis heute überlieferten Namen. Wo sich diese direkt am Ufer befindlichen Wege erhalten haben, werden sie gerne von Wanderern oder Radfahrern genutzt.
