    Mit dem Bau des heutigen Gotteshauses wurde um 1580 begonnen, die Einweihung fand jedoch erst im Jahr 1642 statt. An gleicher Stelle gab es zuvor jedoch schon zwei Vorgängerbauten. Im 14. Jahrhundert wurde hier zunächst eine Kapelle errichtet, die im 15. Jahrhundert durch eine Ziegelkirche ersetzt wurde.

    Als erster christlicher Bau an gleicher Stelle entstand im 14. Jahrhundert eine Kapelle. Diese wurde in den 1430er Jahren durch eine Ziegelkirche (einige Quellen nennen ein Gebäude aus Holz und Naturstein) ersetzt. Der Reichstag in Västerås von 1527 beschloss diese Kirche abzureißen und 1580 begann der Bau der heutigen Kirche im Auftrag des Königs Johann III. Die Bauleitung übernahmen der Architekt Willem Boy und der Baumeister Henrik van Huwen. Nach mehreren Bauverzögerungen konnte die Kirche erst am ersten Advent 1642 unter Anwesenheit der nunmehrigen Königin Christina eingeweiht werden.
