Der Grote Markt, der höchste Punkt der Stadt, wird seit Jahrhunderten als Marktplatz genutzt. Anfangs wurde hauptsächlich mit Getreide gehandelt. Die allgemeinen Warenmärkte, wie sie heute dienstagmorgens und freitags stattfinden, reichen bis ins Jahr 1321 zurück. Seit dem 17. Jahrhundert spielt der Glockenspielmeister der Stadt an Markttagen das Glockenspiel des Großen Turms.
